A Healing Staple in Every Black Kitchen

There’s nothing more satisfying than sipping a cup of rich, golden homemade chicken broth. It’s steamy, savory, and packed with deep, comforting flavor that instantly soothes. Whether you’re under the weather or just need something warm and nourishing, this broth hits every note.

Made with tender chicken bones, aromatic herbs, and fresh vegetables, this isn’t your average store-bought broth. It’s slow-simmered to extract bold flavor and velvety texture, while staying clean, wholesome, and low in sodium. Perfect for sipping, slurping, or building your favorite soups and stews.

Ingredients

For the Broth Base

  • 1 whole chicken (include neck bone for extra richness)
  • Water – enough to fully cover the chicken and veggies in the pot
  • 1 tbsp Better Than Bouillon seasoned vegetable base (or to taste)

Vegetables & Aromatics

  • 3–4 stalks of crisp celery, roughly chopped
  • 2–3 large sweet carrots, roughly chopped
  • 1 large yellow onion, quartered

Fresh Herbs (for Flavor + Healing)

  • 4–5 sprigs of fragrant thyme
  • 2–3 sprigs of earthy rosemary
  • 1 small bunch of fresh parsley (stems included for full flavor)

Seasonings

  • Salt – to taste
  • Black pepper – to taste

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Rough Chop the Veggies

Chop the celery, carrots, and onion into large chunks to release maximum flavor during simmering.

2. Bundle the Herbs

Tie together the thyme, rosemary, and parsley stems into a small bouquet for easy removal later.

3. Add the Chicken

Place the whole chicken and neck bone into a large stockpot, then layer in the chopped veggies and herbs.

4. Season & Cover with Water

Add the Better Than Bouillon, season with salt and pepper, then pour in enough water to fully cover

the ingredients.

5. Simmer the Broth

Bring the pot to a gentle boil, cover, then lower the heat and simmer for 1 hour.

6. Remove and Shred Chicken

Take out the cooked chicken, let it cool, and shred the meat for later use or storage.

7. Return Bones & Simmer Again

Add the bones back to the pot and continue simmering for 4 hours to draw out rich collagen and depth.

8. Strain the Broth

Remove solids with tongs, then strain the broth through a fine mesh sieve for a clean, golden finish.

9. Store for Later

Cool completely and transfer to jars; refrigerate for 4 days or freeze for up to 4 months.

Pro Tips & Suggestions

  • Roast bones first for deeper, richer flavor.
  • Add garlic or ginger for extra health benefits.
  • Freeze in trays for easy grab-and-go portions.
  • Use in rice, greens, or grits—not just soups.
