A Flavor Boost Straight from the Islands

Some syrups are just sweet. But this one? This Toasted Coconut Syrup is a whole experience—rich, nutty, and deeply aromatic with a hint of caramelized coconut that brings island warmth to any dish.

Whether you’re drizzling it over pancakes, mixing it into iced coffee, or glazing sweet buns, this syrup instantly transforms your food into something special. It’s made from simple ingredients, but the flavor payoff is anything but basic.

Created by home chef and food photographer Ci (@cookwithci), this syrup is rooted in comfort and creativity, adding a Caribbean-inspired twist to your kitchen essentials.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup canned coconut milk
  • 1 cup sugar (white, cane, or a mix)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened shredded coconut, toasted
  • Pinch of salt

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Toast the Coconut

  • In a dry skillet over medium heat, add the shredded coconut.
  • Stir constantly until golden brown and fragrant, about 3–5 minutes.
  • Set aside.

Step 2: Make the Syrup Base

  • In a saucepan, combine coconut milk and sugar.
  • Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes.
  • Stir occasionally until it thickens slightly.

Step 3: Add Flavor

  • Stir in the vanilla extract and toasted coconut.
  • Add a pinch of salt to balance the sweetness.

Step 4: Cool and Store

  • Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  • Strain for a smooth syrup or leave the coconut in for texture.
  • Store in a glass jar or bottle in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

  • Use it warm or chilled: Heat slightly before serving for the best pourable texture.
  • Pair it right: Perfect over pancakes, waffles, French toast, pound cake, or roasted sweet potatoes.
  • Try it in drinks: Add to iced coffee, cold brew, or even a coconut milk latte for tropical café vibes.
  • Strain or not: Leaving the coconut flakes in adds texture and depth—but you can strain it for a silky version.
