The Banana Pudding for Folks Who Don’t Like Bananas

We all know banana pudding is that Southern staple — the one that shows up on every holiday table, especially around Thanksgiving. But let’s be real, not everybody loves the texture of bananas in their dessert. If you’re one of those folks who loves the flavor but can’t do the mushy slices, this recipe is for you.

@_kookingwithki came through with a version that’s smooth, creamy, and gives you that nostalgic banana pudding flavor without a single banana chunk. Instead of layering raw slices, she purees caramelized bananas into the pudding, making sure every bite is packed with flavor and none of the texture drama. And the twist? A mix of vanilla wafers and Golden Oreos that takes this dessert to the next level. Let’s get into it.

Ingredients

For the Caramelized Banana Puree:

  • 3–4 ripe bananas
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar (optional, for deeper sweetness)

For the Pudding Base:

  • 1 packet instant banana pudding mix
  • 2 cups milk of choice (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 1 cup Cool Whip or whipped topping

For the Cookie Layers:

  • 1 cup crushed vanilla wafers
  • 1 cup crushed Golden Oreos

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Caramelize the Bananas

  • In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter and sauté sliced bananas until golden and fragrant.
  • Add brown sugar if desired and cook until syrupy.

2. Make the Puree

  • Transfer the caramelized bananas to a blender.
  • Blend until completely smooth.

3. Prepare the Pudding Base

  • In a bowl, whisk together the instant pudding mix and milk until thick.
  • Fold in Cool Whip for creaminess.

4. Combine Banana and Pudding

  • Stir the banana puree into the pudding mix until fully blended and silky.

5. Layer the Dessert

  • In a dish or jars, alternate layers of crushed cookies and pudding mixture until filled, ending with cookies on top.

6. Chill and Serve

  • Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight before serving for the best texture and flavor.

Pro Tips & Suggestions

  • Use overripe bananas for a naturally sweeter puree.
  • Don’t skip chilling — it allows flavors to meld and texture to set.
  • Try dairy-free whipped topping for a vegan-friendly twist.
  • Top with crushed cookies right before serving for crunch.
