Labouyi – Creamy Haitian Oatmeal Recipe for Comforting Mornings

The Comforting Taste of Haitian Oatmeal

Haitian cuisine is filled with rich flavors and soulful dishes, and Labouyi, or Haitian oatmeal, is no exception. This creamy, spiced porridge is a staple in Haitian households, offering warmth, nutrition, and a taste of home. Unlike traditional oatmeal, this recipe infuses aromatic spices like cinnamon, star anise, and nutmeg, creating a flavorful and comforting bowl that’s both nourishing and delicious. Whether you prefer it smooth or slightly textured, Labouyi is an easy and satisfying breakfast option to start your day right.

Ingredients: What You Need

  • 2 cups water
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 star anise
  • Lime peel
  • 1.5 cups oatmeal
  • 3 cups water (for soaking)
  • 2 tbsp coconut sugar
  • ½ tbsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup whole milk
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp ghee

Step-By-Step Instructions

Step 1: Infuse the Flavors

In a pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add the cinnamon sticks, star anise, and lime peel. Let it simmer for about 10 minutes to release the flavors.

Step 2: Soak the Oats

While the spices are simmering, soak the oatmeal in 3 cups of water for at least 30 minutes. This helps soften the oats, making them creamier when cooked.

Step 3: Cook the Oats

Strain the soaked oats and add them to the pot along with 2 cups of the soaking water. Stir occasionally and let it cook for about 8 minutes.

Step 4: Blend for Creaminess

Once the oatmeal has cooked, transfer it to a blender and blend for about 2 minutes until it reaches a smooth consistency.

Step 5: Bring It All Together

Pour the blended oatmeal back into the pot, keeping the cinnamon sticks, star anise, and lime peel to continue infusing flavor. Stir in the coconut sugar, vanilla extract, whole milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and ghee. Let it simmer for a few more minutes until well combined.

Step 6: Serve & Enjoy

Pour the creamy Labouyi into a bowl and enjoy warm! For extra indulgence, top with a drizzle of honey or a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Pro Tips for the Best Labouyi

  • Adjust the Texture: If you like your oatmeal extra smooth, blend it for a longer time. If you prefer it chunkier, blend it briefly or skip blending altogether.
  • Sweeten to Taste: Coconut sugar adds a mild sweetness, but you can substitute with brown sugar, honey, or sweetened condensed milk for a richer flavor.
  • Milk Alternatives: For a dairy-free version, use coconut milk or almond milk.
  • Storage: Labouyi thickens as it cools. Add a splash of milk or water when reheating to maintain its creamy texture.
