The Soul of Every Holiday Table—Made Easy

When it comes to Black family traditions, few desserts are as beloved and essential as Sweet Potato Pie. But don’t get it twisted—this isn’t just a holiday thing. @jerricadarapper shows us how to whip up this classic dessert that delivers comfort, flavor, and cultural pride in every bite. With a perfectly spiced, creamy filling and that melt-in-your-mouth crust, this is the pie you pull up with when you want to impress everybody at the table.

Made with real sweet potatoes, warm spices, and three deep-dish crusts, this recipe comes together with just the right amount of sweetness and soul. Whether you’re baking it for Thanksgiving, Sunday dinner, or just because—it’s always the right time for a homemade Sweet Potato Pie.

Ingredients

For the Filling

  • 5 sweet potatoes, boiled until fork-tender
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 cup regular white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon nutmeg
  • ½ stick melted butter
  • ½ cup additional sugar (optional, to taste)
  • 2 eggs

For the Crust

  • 3 deep dish pie crusts
  • Melted butter, for basting

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Boil and Prep the Sweet Potatoes

  • Boil 5 whole sweet potatoes until they are completely fork-tender.
  • Peel off the skins once cool enough to handle.

2. Mash the Potatoes

  • Place the peeled sweet potatoes into a large mixing bowl.
  • Blend with a hand mixer until smooth, making sure there are no strings or lumps.

3. Mix the Base Ingredients

  • Add the sweetened condensed milk, brown sugar, white sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and melted butter.
  • Mix until fully combined and smooth.

4. Taste and Adjust Sweetness

  • Taste the mixture and, if needed, add up to ½ cup more sugar for your desired level of sweetness.

5. Add the Eggs

  • Crack in 2 eggs and mix them thoroughly into the batter until everything is well incorporated.

6. Prep the Pie Crusts

  • Take your 3 deep dish pie crusts, and baste the insides with melted butter.
  • Evenly distribute the sweet potato filling among them.

7. Bake and Cool

  • Bake at 350°F for 55 minutes.
  • Allow the pies to cool completely before slicing and serving.

Pro Tips & Suggestions

  • Use a hand mixer or stand mixer to ensure your filling is ultra-smooth and string-free.
  • Always taste before adding extra sugar—sweet potatoes vary in natural sweetness.
  • Let the pie cool for at least 2–3 hours before slicing to allow it to fully set.
  • Serve chilled or at room temperature with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
