Rooted deep in Southern tradition, this rich, buttery treat has long been a symbol of comfort and celebration in Black homes. Whether it’s served at a Sunday dinner, family reunion, or just because—it never fails to hit the spot.

This particular version—shared by Instagram creator @jaaliyahs—takes things up a notch by infusing bright lemon flavors and a tangy glaze that makes each slice sing. With ingredients like sour cream, buttermilk, and a splash of 7UP (yes, you read that right!), this pound cake is moist, fluffy, and unforgettable. This is your go-to cake for everything from potlucks to date nights and everything in between.


Ingredients List (What You Need)

For the Pound Cake:

  • 3 sticks unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups white sugar
  • 1 tsp lemon zest
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3/4 cup lemon-lime soda (like 7UP)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 5 eggs, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

For the Lemon Glaze:

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Cream the Butter and Sugar
In a large mixing bowl, combine softened butter and white sugar. Beat with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.

2. Add Citrus and Salt
Mix in the lemon zest, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt. This adds brightness and depth to your base.

3. Add the Sour Cream
Blend in the sour cream until fully incorporated, ensuring the batter stays smooth and rich.

4. Mix in Eggs and Soda
Crack in the eggs one at a time, followed by the lemon-lime soda and vanilla extract. Beat until well mixed.

5. Combine Dry Ingredients
Gradually add in the all-purpose flour. Mix gently to avoid overworking the batter.

6. Finish with Buttermilk and Remaining Flour
Add the buttermilk and the remaining flour. Stir until just combined, scraping down the sides to ensure everything is mixed.

7. Prepare Your Pan

8. Bake to Perfection
Bake at 325°F for 1 hour and 25 minutes. Use a toothpick to check for doneness—it should come out clean.

9. Make the Glaze
In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, heavy cream, and lemon juice until smooth and pourable.

10. Cool and Glaze
Once the cake is completely cooled, drizzle the lemon glaze over the top. Let it set before slicing.
