A Classic Creamy Southern Buttermilk Salad Dressing

Buttermilk Salad Dressing is a smooth, tangy Southern classic made with buttermilk, eggs, mustard, and a touch of lemon juice. Its rich, creamy texture and balanced flavor make it an excellent dressing for fresh garden salads, crisp greens, and vegetable platters.

Featured in Big Mama’s Old Black Pot Recipes by Ethel Rayson Dixon, this homemade dressing reflects the Southern tradition of preparing simple pantry ingredients from scratch to complement fresh seasonal produce.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 Tablespoon dry mustard
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs (beaten)
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 teaspoons sugar

Makes: 2-1/4 cups

Instructions

  • In a saucepan, whisk together the cornstarch, dry mustard, salt, and pepper.
  • Gradually stir in the beaten eggs and buttermilk, mixing constantly until smooth.
  • Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring continuously. Do not allow it to boil.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the white vinegar, lemon juice, and sugar, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  • Slowly pour the vinegar mixture into the warm buttermilk mixture, stirring well after each addition until fully incorporated.
  • Remove from the heat and allow the dressing to cool completely.
  • Refrigerate until thoroughly chilled before serving over your favorite salad.

Closing Summary / Pro Tips

  • A creamy homemade dressing with classic Southern flavor.
  • Chill well before serving for the best consistency.
  • Perfect for green salads, vegetable salads, or as a dip for fresh vegetables.
  • Store refrigerated in a sealed container and stir before each use.
