The patty melt has long held its place in American diner culture, but this recipe gives it a home-cooked twist with Dan-O’s seasoning, buttery onions, and a punchy burger sauce. It’s part grilled cheese, part burger, and 100% crave-worthy. Whether it’s dinner for one or a weekend treat for the whole fam, this melt will have everybody asking for seconds.
Ingredients
- Ground beef (formed into balls)
- Butter
- Worcestershire sauce
- Dan-O’s Seasoning (Yum Yum Get Ya Sum)
- American cheese slices
- Mozzarella cheese
- Bread slices (your choice: Texas toast, sourdough, rye, etc.)
- Burger sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- Onions, sliced (for caramelizing)
- Parchment paper
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Caramelize the Onions
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and add butter.
- Toss in the sliced onions and a splash of Worcestershire sauce.
- Stir occasionally and cook low and slow until onions turn golden and soft.
- Once done, remove from skillet and set aside.

2. Cook the Patties
- In the same skillet, place meatballs of ground beef.
- Top each one with parchment paper, then flatten into a patty using a spatula or heavy press.
- Season with Dan-O’s Yum Yum Get Ya Sum.
- Cook for about 3–4 minutes, then flip and season the other side.
- Add a slice of American cheese to each patty and stack them.
- Cover the skillet with a lid to melt the cheese completely.
- Remove from skillet once melted and gooey.

3. Toast the Bread
- In a separate skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
- Add bread slices and toast until golden brown and crisp.

4. Assemble the Patty Melt
- Spread burger sauce on the inside of each bread slice.
- Layer with a bit of mozzarella cheese, then add your stacked cheesy patty.
- Pile on the caramelized onions and more mozzarella cheese.
- Top with the second slice of bread.

5. Melt & Finish
- Return the sandwich to the skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes per side, until the cheese is melted and the bread is perfectly crisp.

Pro Tips and Serving Suggestions
- Get a good sear on your patties by not flipping too soon—this locks in the juices.
- Mix cheeses for extra stretch and melt. Mozzarella and American are a dream combo, but provolone or pepper jack work too.
- Serve with crispy fries, sweet potato wedges, or a quick slaw to round it out.
- Make your own burger sauce with mayo, ketchup, mustard, diced pickles, and a pinch of smoked paprika.
- For a sweet and spicy twist, add candied jalapeños or a swipe of BBQ sauce under the onions.
