Creamy Smothered Cabbage with Garlic, Peppers, and Bold Seasoning


This Smothered Cabbage recipe brings comfort and flavor in every bite. Unlike your average steamed or sautéed cabbage, this version is bathed in broth, enriched with cream cheese, and topped off with Parmesan for a rich, creamy finish. With a medley of sweet peppers, savory aromatics, and perfectly balanced spices, it’s a soul food side that eats like a main.

Whether you’re pairing it with cornbread and baked chicken or keeping it low-carb and flavorful, this dish delivers Southern comfort with a modern twist.


Ingredients

  • 1 head of cabbage, chopped
  • ½ red bell pepper, sliced (optional)
  • ½ orange bell pepper, sliced (optional)
  • 1 yellow onion, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon garlic paste
  • 1–2 tablespoons olive oil, for sautéing
  • 4 oz cream cheese, cubed
  • ½ cup chicken broth
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch + 1 tablespoon water (for slurry)

Seasonings:

  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon lemon pepper (Ms. Dash or similar)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • ½ teaspoon chicken bouillon powder

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Sauté the Base

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet or sauté pan over medium heat.
  • Add onions and optional bell peppers, sauté until softened.
  • Stir in garlic paste and cook until fragrant (about 1 minute).

Step 2: Add the Cabbage and Seasonings

  • Add the chopped cabbage to the pan in batches, allowing it to wilt down.
  • Season with Italian seasoning, lemon pepper, red pepper flakes, salt, pepper, and chicken bouillon.
  • Stir well to combine.

Step 3: Make It Creamy

  • Add the cream cheese and chicken broth, stirring until the cream cheese melts and coats the cabbage.
  • Mix the cornstarch and water in a small bowl to create a slurry.
  • Pour the slurry into the pan and stir—this will help thicken the sauce.

Step 4: Finish with Parmesan and Serve

  • Once the cabbage is tender and the sauce is thickened, sprinkle in Parmesan cheese.
  • Stir until creamy and smooth.
  • Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
  • Serve hot as a main or hearty side.
