Southern Baked Beans with Ground Beef & Sausage: A BBQ Classic Reinvented
These aren’t your average canned beans. This Southern-style baked beans recipe is a soul food remix passed down through generations. What starts with a simple can of Bush’s baked beans turns into a rich, hearty dish thanks to bold spices, a savory meat blend, and a hint of sweetness from brown sugar. It’s the kind of dish that holds its own on a holiday table and feeds the block on any given weekend.
While many reserve baked beans for summertime cookouts, this version is so satisfying, you’ll find yourself craving it in the colder months too. It’s thick, meaty, and packed with flavor—a perfect side or main when served over rice or with cornbread.
Ingredients List (What You Need)
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 1 red bell pepper, diced
- ½ yellow or white onion, diced
- 1 pound spicy Italian sausage (casings removed)
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 cup light or dark brown sugar
- 2 cans Bush’s baked beans (28 oz each)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Preheat Your Oven
Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) so it’s ready to finish off the dish later.
2. Sauté the Veggies
In a large cast iron pot or Dutch oven over medium heat, add a little oil and sauté the diced green bell pepper, red bell pepper, and onion. Cook until soft and fragrant—about 5–7 minutes.

3. Brown the Sausage
Remove the casing from the Italian sausage and add it to the pot. Break it up with a spoon and cook thoroughly until browned. Remove any excess grease if needed.

4. Add Ground Beef
Next, add the ground beef to the same pot. Stir and cook until browned and fully cooked through. You should now have a flavorful meat-veggie base.

5. Mix in the Beans
Pour in both cans of Bush’s baked beans and gently stir everything together.

6. Sweeten It Up
Sprinkle in the brown sugar and stir well to combine. This helps balance the savory with a classic sweet Southern touch.

7. Bake Until Thick & Creamy
Place the uncovered pot in the oven and bake at 375°F for 2 hours. This long bake reduces the mixture into a thick, almost creamy consistency that’s irresistible.

8. Serve & Enjoy
Let it cool slightly, then serve hot. These beans are perfect alone, over white rice, or as a rich side dish at your next family gathering.
