When rich seafood, spicy sausage, and aromatic rice come together, magic happens.
Seafood Dirty Rice is a bold Southern classic, packed with smoky flavors, savory seafood, and comforting spices that take you straight to the heart of home cooking.
This dish elevates traditional dirty rice by loading it with raw shrimp, crab lumps, and crawfish tails, all balanced by Jimmy Dean hot sausage and a colorful blend of onions and bell peppers. It’s the kind of soul-satisfying meal that’s perfect for gatherings, celebrations, or just feeding your inner foodie in style.
Ingredients
For the Seafood Dirty Rice:
- 1 pound raw shrimp, peeled, deveined, tail on
- 1 white onion, diced
- 4 bell peppers, diced (mix of colors recommended)
- ½ pound crab lump meat
- 1–2 tablespoons browning sauce
- ½ pound crawfish tail meat
- 1 package Jimmy Dean hot sausage
- 2–3 green onions, chopped
- 2 cups basmati rice, rinsed and drained
- 1 tablespoon Better Than Bouillon Roasted Beef Base (adds rich, deep flavor)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1. Cook the Aromatics
- In a large skillet or pot, cook the Jimmy Dean hot sausage over medium heat until browned.
- Add the white onion and bell peppers. Sauté until they are soft and fragrant.

Step 2. Build the Flavor Base
- Stir in 1 tablespoon of Better Than Bouillon Roasted Beef Base and 1–2 tablespoons of browning sauce, mixing well to coat the sausage and vegetables in rich flavor.
- Add the crawfish tail meat and cook for 2–3 minutes.
- Gently fold in the crab lump meat and raw shrimp. Cook until the shrimp are pink and opaque.

Step 3. Add the Rice
- Stir in the rinsed basmati rice to absorb all the flavorful juices.
- Add enough water or seafood stock to cover the rice by about an inch.
- Cover and simmer until the rice is tender and has absorbed the liquid, about 18–20 minutes.

Step 4. Finish and Serve
- Once cooked, fluff the rice and stir in the chopped green onions.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
- Serve hot, garnished with extra green onions or a side of hot sauce if desired. Enjoy!

Pro Tips & Serving Suggestions
- Don’t Overcook the Seafood: Shrimp and crawfish cook quickly — add them last to keep them tender and juicy.
- Use Seafood Stock: Replace water with seafood stock for deeper flavor throughout the rice.
- Mix Up Your Veggies: Want even more flavor? Add diced celery or jalapeños to the sauté.
- Perfect Pairing: Serve with a crisp green salad, buttered cornbread, or a side of black-eyed peas for a full Southern meal.
