If you love apple pie but feel like baking is rocket science, this baked apples recipe is your new best friend. It delivers all the warm, spiced flavors of apple pie without the stress of rolling out dough or perfecting a crust. With just a few simple steps, you’ll have a dessert that tastes like it took hours, but only requires minimal effort.

Whether you’re serving this as a solo treat or pairing it with ice cream, you’re in for a deliciously cozy experience. The combination of soft, baked apples with a rich, spiced crumble topping makes this a go-to dessert when you want something warm, satisfying, and easy to whip up.

Ingredients

For the Apples

  • 4 large apples (Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Gala)
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice (or a mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice)
  • 2 tablespoons honey (for drizzling)

For the Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 packet of instant oats (about ½ cup)
  • 1 stick (½ cup) unsalted butter, softened

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

  1. Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking dish with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

Step 2: Prepare the Apples

  1. Wash and slice off the tops of the apples.
  2. Using a spoon or corer, carefully remove the core and seeds, making sure to leave the bottom intact to hold the filling.

Step 3: Make the Filling

  1. In a bowl, mix the brown sugar, butter, and apple pie spice until it forms a smooth paste.
  2. Coat the insides of the apples with this mixture for extra flavor.

Step 4: Prepare the Crumble Topping

  1. In a separate bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, oats, and softened butter.
  1. Mix with your hands or a fork until the texture is crumbly.

Step 5: Stuff the Apples

  1. Pack the crumble mixture into the hollowed-out apples, pressing it in gently.
  1. Place a small pat of butter on top of each apple and drizzle with honey.

Step 6: Bake

  1. Arrange the apples in the prepared baking dish.
  2. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.

Step 7: Serve and Enjoy

  1. Let the apples cool for a few minutes before serving.
  2. Enjoy them as is or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the ultimate treat!

Pro Tips for Perfect Baked Apples

  • Dairy-Free Option: Swap butter for coconut oil or vegan butter to make this dessert completely dairy-free.
  • Best Apples to Use: Honeycrisp and Granny Smith apples hold their shape well while baking, offering a balance of sweet and tart flavors.
  • Add a Crunch: Toss in chopped pecans or walnuts into the crumble mixture for extra texture.
  • Make It Boozy: For an adult twist, drizzle the apples with a splash of bourbon before baking.
