The Ultimate Comfort Meal: Salisbury Steaks with Garlic Mashed Potatoes

When it comes to comfort food, few dishes hit like smothered Salisbury steaks in savory gravy. This recipe turns a weeknight staple into a soulful feast, pairing juicy beef patties with spiced brown gravy and buttery garlic mashed potatoes that soak it all up.

Seasoned with smoked paprika, chili powder, and a touch of heat, this meal brings that familiar Southern energy with bold flavor in every bite. It’s easy to prepare, deeply satisfying, and undeniably Black folks approved.

Ingredients

Salisbury Steaks

  • 3 lbs lean ground beef
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tsp pink salt (or 1 tbsp)
  • 2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp onion powder
  • 2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp ground mustard

Gravy

  • 6 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp Lawry’s seasoning salt
  • ¼ tsp red pepper chili flakes (optional, for heat)
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 16 oz broth (beef, chicken, or vegetable)

Mashed Potatoes

  • 3 lbs Yukon potatoes
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 6 tbsp butter
  • 2 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp chili powder
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Make the Salisbury Steaks

  1. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, eggs, and all steak seasonings until fully combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into oval patties.
  3. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Sear patties on both sides until browned (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet). Remove and set aside.

Step 2: Build the Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté minced garlic for 1 minute.
  2. Add chili powder, onion powder, Lawry’s seasoning salt, and red pepper flakes. Stir well.
  3. Whisk in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes.
  4. Slowly pour in broth, whisking constantly to avoid lumps.
  5. Simmer until the gravy is rich and thickened.

Step 3: Smother & Simmer

  1. Return the browned patties to the skillet.
  2. Cover and simmer on low heat for 15–20 minutes, or until patties are fully cooked (160°F internal temp).

Step 4: Make the Mashed Potatoes

  1. Boil Yukon potatoes in salted water until very tender. Drain and return to the pot.
  2. In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream, butter, garlic, salt, pepper, chili powder, and smoked paprika until warm.
  3. Mash the potatoes while gradually adding the cream mixture, until smooth and creamy.
  4. Adjust texture to your preference with more cream or butter.

Pro Tips & Serving Suggestions

  • Double the Gravy: Want it extra smothered? Double the gravy ingredients—you’ll thank yourself later.
  • Turn Up the Heat: Add more chili flakes or a splash of hot sauce to the gravy for a spicier twist.
  • Make It a Meal: Serve with garlic green beans, fried cabbage, or sweet cornbread for a full Southern spread.
  • Meal Prep Friendly: This dish reheats beautifully—perfect for Sunday meal prep or next-day leftovers.
  • Reheat Like a Pro: Skip the microwave. Reheat in a skillet or oven to keep that gravy rich and patties juicy.
