There’s something about a bowl of homemade chicken and dumplings that brings instant comfort. This dish is warm, hearty, and full of rich flavors, making it a go-to meal whenever you’re craving something satisfying and nourishing.

Made with tender, slow-simmered chicken, a creamy, seasoned broth, and fluffy biscuit dumplings, this recipe is the perfect balance of simplicity and indulgence. Whether you’re feeding the family or just looking for a cozy meal, these chicken and dumplings are guaranteed to hit the spot.

Ingredients:

For the Chicken and Broth:

  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 32 oz chicken broth
  • 1 can cream of chicken with herbs
  • 2 stalks celery, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • ½ onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1 ½ cups heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp avocado oil
  • Salt, if needed

For the Dumplings:

  • Biscuit mix (prepared according to package instructions)

Seasonings Used:

  • City Cajun seasoning (not spicy)
  • Garlic Butter & Herb seasoning

Step-By-Step Cooking Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Chicken

  1. Season the chicken thighs generously with City Cajun seasoning.
  2. Heat a pot over medium-high heat and add avocado oil.
  3. Sear the seasoned chicken thighs until fully cooked through, about 5-7 minutes per side.
  1. Remove the chicken from the pot and set it aside to rest.

Step 2: Build the Flavorful Broth

  1. In the same pot, add butter and melt over medium heat.
  1. Toss in the diced celery, carrots, and onion, and cook for 2-3 minutes until slightly softened.
  2. Add the minced garlic and stir for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Pour in the can of cream of chicken soup and the chicken broth, then bring everything to a gentle boil.

Step 3: Shred the Chicken & Add Cream

  1. Once boiling, return the cooked chicken thighs to the pot and let them simmer until they are tender enough to shred.
  1. Shred the chicken directly in the pot using two forks.
  2. Pour in the heavy cream and stir.
  3. Add the Garlic Butter & Herb seasoning, then bring the mixture to a slight boil again.

Step 4: Make the Dumplings

  1. Prepare the biscuit dough according to the package instructions.
  2. Tear the dough into small chunks and drop them directly into the simmering broth.
  3. Let the dumplings cook uncovered for 5-10 minutes, or until they are fully cooked and soft.

Step 5: Serve & Enjoy!

  1. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt, if needed.
  2. Ladle into bowls, serve hot, and enjoy a cozy bowl of Southern comfort!

Pro Tips for Perfect Chicken & Dumplings

  • Use Dark Meat for Extra Flavor – Chicken thighs stay tender and juicy in the broth, making them the best choice for this dish.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Dumplings – When adding biscuit dough, drop them in separate areas so they don’t clump together.
  • Adjust the Thickness – If you want a thicker broth, let the dish simmer a bit longer. If you prefer it thinner, add a splash of extra chicken broth.
  • Enhance with Herbs – Sprinkling fresh thyme or parsley on top before serving will elevate the flavors.
