6 lbs apples (washed and chopped, skin on)
1/4 cup water
2 cups white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 tbsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp allspice
1/4 tsp ground cloves
2 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp vanilla extract
Extra for Canning:
Apple cider vinegar (for cleaning jar lids)
Sterilized mason jars & lids
Cooking Time:
Stovetop: 1 hour on medium-low heat
Crockpot: 10 hours on low
Water Bath for Canning: 15 to 20 minutes
Step-By-Step: Making That Smooth Apple Butter
Step 1: Clean & Prep Those Apples
First things first—get those apples squeaky clean. Since we’re not peeling them, we want to make sure we scrub them real good. Once they’re nice and clean, chop them up into bite-sized pieces. As I cut, I throw them into cold water to keep them from turning brown.
When all the apples are chopped, drain the water and give them one final rinse. Now, we’re ready to cook.
