SUMMARY:National Bootlegger's Day
DESCRIPTION:Templeton Rye Whiskey shares its January 17th birthday with bootlegger Al Capone and the son of another bootlegger\, Meryl Kerkhoff.During the 1800s\, the term bootlegger came into use in the Midwest. The word described the act of concealing flasks of liquor in a boot top when going to trade with Native Americans. The term found its permanent place in the American vocabulary when Congress passed the Eighteenth Amendment prohibiting the manufacture\, transportation\, and sale of alcohol in 1920. \nThe first observance of National Bootlegger’s Day was in 2015\, instated by Infinium Spirits to celebrate the birth of Templeton Rye\, a whiskey distilled by farmers in Templeton\, Iowa\, during the heights of the prohibition.

SUMMARY:Rid the World of Fad Diets & Gimmicks Day
DESCRIPTION:What is Rid the World of Fad Diets and Gimmicks Day? Rid the World of Fad Diets and Gimmicks Day is celebrated on the third Tuesday of January each year in the U.S. to widely promote proper weight management by exercising and eating healthy food. \nIn the mid-1800s\, the ideal masculine and feminine beauty gravitated toward thinness. Overweight romantics got the short end of the fashion stick as clothing became form-fitting for both sexes. From 1850 to 1920\, women’s dresses required a tiny laced-in waist. Men wore tights or breeches with tight-fitting jackets until close to the end of the 19th century when the vogue switched to looser pants. Being overweight was such a social handicap at the time that a book published in 1881 even suggested that governments arrest and imprison overweight people.

Fig Newtons came into existence when\, in the 19th century\, physicians began to promote an increase in biscuits and fruit in one’s diet as a remedy for digestive problems. \nIn 1891\, they produced the first Fig Newtons baked at the F.A. Kennedy Steam Bakery. The company named the pastries after the town of Newton\, Massachusetts. After recently becoming associated\, the Kennedy Biscuit Company and the New York Biscuit company merged to form Nabisco.

SUMMARY:National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day
DESCRIPTION:Pastrami lovers across the country look forward to their favorite sandwich on January 14th as they recognize National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day. \nPopular delicatessen meat\, pastrami is usually made from beef. Others make their pastrami sandwich with pork\, mutton\, or turkey. Before refrigeration\, butchers originally created pastrami as a way to preserve meat. To make pastrami\, they placed the raw meat in brine. Then they partially dried it and seasoned it with various herbs and spices to be smoked and steamed. A wave of Romanian Jewish immigration introduced pastrami (pronounced pastróme)\, a Romanian specialty\, in the second half of the 19th century. Early English references used the spelling “pastrama” before the modified “pastrami” spelling was used. New York kosher butcher\, Sussman Volk earns credit for producing the first pastrami sandwich in 1887. He claimed to have gotten the recipe from a Romanian friend in exchange for storing his luggage. Due to the popularity of his sandwich\, Volk converted his butcher shop into a restaurant to sell pastrami sandwiches.

SUMMARY:National Marzipan Day
DESCRIPTION:Marzipan\, a delicious and light treat made of a fairly unusual combination of sugar and almond meal\, often accented with almond extract. It has been used in all varieties of sweets and treats\, and manages to be both kosher and appropriate for Lent. Its excellent mutability makes it popular for themed cakes and confections\, as it can be molded into just about anything. During the rest of the year\, it’s often found served with chocolate\, making it a powerfully decadent treat that’s more than a little loved by its fans. \nWhile Persia is the most likely place for it to have found its start\, there is also ample evidence that Spain either developed a version of its own\, or was the actual starting place of this confectionary treat.

SUMMARY:Bittersweet Chocolate Day
DESCRIPTION:Today is Bittersweet Chocolate Day! Bittersweet chocolate is a sweetened form of dark chocolate made with cocoa liquor\, sugar\, cocoa butter\, and vanilla. Unlike milk chocolate or white chocolate\, it does not contain any milk solids. \nChocolate comes from the seed of the tropical Theobroma cacao tree. Cacao\, which has been cultivated for at least three millennia\, is grown in Mexico\, Central America\, and Northern South America. The earliest known documentation of the use of cacao seeds is around 1100 BC. The cacao tree seed has an intensely bitter taste and must be fermented to develop the flavor.

SUMMARY:National Apricot Day
DESCRIPTION:Apricots ripen in the early summer\, but they’re quite commonly dried so that way we can enjoy them year-round. The word ‘apricot’ in Latin purportedly means “precious”\, but further investigation reveals that while this moniker is appropriate\, it actually comes from Arabic ‘al barqūq’ (“early ripe”) via French ‘abricot’. \nApricots are found the world over but originated in northeastern China near the Russian border in ancient times. Later\, the fruit was introduced to Europe and Armenia.

DESCRIPTION:Apple Tree Day started off as a celebration of an old apple tree\, which had been around for two centuries. As time went on\, this day morphed into a celebration of the fruit itself. \nOriginating in Central Asia\, apples then made their way to Europe where they grew for many years before European colonists brought them over to North America during the 17th century. SUMMARY:National Bloody Mary Day
DESCRIPTION:National Bloody Mary Day celebrates the drinking of the Bloody Mary cocktail\, which is described by some as the perfect hangover cure–despite the fact that it happens to contain the very thing that made the person hung over in the first place: alcohol! \nOrigin: Popular theory puts the Bloody Mary’s birthplace in Paris in 1921\, where Fernand “Pete” Petiot\, bartender at Harry’s New York Bar (then known as The New York Bar)\, was credited with creating an alcoholic tomato juice cocktail spiced with some salt and pepper and a couple of dashes of Worcestershire sauce.
